TOEFL iBT scores for Australian visas (2026)
What TOEFL score you actually need - by English level, by component, with the points each level is worth.
TOEFL iBT at a glance. Competent English is 16 / 16 / 19 / 19 and Superior English is 26 / 27 / 30 / 28 (listening / reading / writing / speaking). You must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when you register. Results not registered under that pathway are not accepted for Australian visa purposes, and the Home Edition is not accepted.
TOEFL scores for each English level
Every row is a minimum in each component. There is no averaging and no compensation between components - one score below the line fails the whole level.
| English level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Skilled points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vocational English | 8 | 8 | 9 | 14 | Not points-tested. |
| Competent English | 16 | 16 | 19 | 19 | 0 points - it is the entry ticket, not a scoring band. |
| Proficient English | 22 | 22 | 26 | 24 | 10 points on the skilled points test. |
| Superior English | 26 | 27 | 30 | 28 | 20 points on the skilled points test. |
Where TOEFL fits
You must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when you register. Results not registered under that pathway are not accepted for Australian visa purposes, and the Home Edition is not accepted.
Test results are generally valid for 3 years from the test date for skilled and most permanent visas, and 2 years for the student visa. The result must still be inside its validity period on the day you lodge, not on the day you sat it.
Student and graduate visas use different tables
The subclass 500 and 485 visas do not use the five statutory levels. See the student visa 500 English requirements and the 485 graduate visa English requirements.
